Upcoming Fairtrade webinar featuring Richard Anker to discuss the role trade unions in living wage initiatives

November 24, 2021

We are very pleased to announce that Fairtrade International will be hosting a webinar: ‘Achieving living wage in your international supply chain: what trade unions can do for you’, featuring GLWC founding member Richard Anker, on 9 December!

Trade unions have a primary role in setting wages through social dialogue, mostly by negotiating collective agreements with employers and their associations and in tri-partite processes that also involve governments. Yet, too often in strategies to promote Living Wages in global supply chains, the role of trade unions and social dialogue remains marginal. The risk of developing Living Wage strategies not based on or at least aligned with social dialogue, is that collective bargaining as means for wage setting is undermined, the position of trade unions in the workplace is eroded and that Living Wages do not become a right in practice.

During the webinar, several international speakers will discuss best practices and solutions and Dutch trade union organizations, CNV and FNV, with support from Fairtrade, will address the role of unions in Living Wage initiatives.

Speakers will include Janepher Nassali, general secretary of the Ugandan trade union UHISPAWU, Professor Mark Anner, author of the recent Solidarity Center Report: “What Difference Does a Union Make? Banana Plantations in the North and South of Guatemala” and Dr. Richard Anker, well known for his research, publications and methodology on Living Wages.

This webinar will take place on December 9, 2021 at 3:00 PM in Amsterdam and 9:00 AM Eastern time.
